Useful pair lists
Spelling conversion: British to American (colour → color, organise → organize) or the reverse for a different audience.
Brand and product renames: update an old product name, domain or company name across a whole document.
Plain-language editing: utilize → use, in order to → to, at this point in time → now.
Templates: fill placeholders such as {name} and {date} (turn off whole words for braces).
Code and data: rename variables, map old IDs to new ones, or fix column codes in CSV text.
Why order matters
Suppose the pairs are cat → dog and dog → wolf. Applied one after another, “cat” becomes “dog” and then “wolf”. Applied all at once, “cat” becomes “dog” and stays “dog”, while an original “dog” becomes “wolf”. All-at-once mode also tries longer find values first, so “New York City” is replaced before “New York” when both are in your list.
Frequently asked questions
How do I paste pairs from a spreadsheet?
Put the words to find in one column and the replacements in the next, select both columns and copy. When pasted, each row becomes a line with a tab between the two cells, which the tool detects automatically.
What is the difference between “All at once” and “One after another”?
All at once scans the text a single time and replaces every match with its partner, so a replacement is never changed again. That makes swaps (Alice → Bob and Bob → Alice) work and lets longer phrases win over shorter ones. One after another applies the first pair to the whole text, then the second pair to that result, and so on, which is useful when you deliberately want chained edits.
How do I delete words instead of replacing them?
Leave the replacement empty: write the word followed by the separator and nothing after it, for example “very =>” or “very” followed by a tab. Deleted text is shown in red in the preview.
What does “Match the case of each found word” do?
With case-insensitive matching on, a pair like colour → color also changes “Colour” to “Color” and “COLOUR” to “COLOR”, so sentence starts and headings keep their capitalisation.
Can I use regular expressions?
Yes. Tick “Find column is a regular expression” and use JavaScript regex syntax. The replacement can refer to capture groups with $1, $2, $<name> and to the whole match with $&. Regex pairs are always applied one after another.
What if my find text contains a comma or arrow?
Choose a separator that does not appear in your data, such as Tab or |, instead of Auto. With Auto, the tool uses the first of tab, =>, ->, |, comma found on each line, splitting only at its first occurrence.
Is my text uploaded?
No. All replacements run locally in your browser, so documents, code and word lists stay on your device.
