How to use the Sinhala Keyboard
- Choose a typing mode: Wijesekara, Singlish (phonetic).
- Type with your keyboard (keep “Type with my physical keyboard” ticked) or click the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Sinhala character it types.
- Hold Shift or press the on-screen ⇧ key for the second character on each key.
- Use the quick characters below the keyboard for marks and symbols that are not on the main layout.
- Copy the text and paste it anywhere, download it as a .txt file, or search Google for it directly.
About the Sinhala keyboard
Sinhala is written in its own rounded abugida script. Consonants carry an inherent vowel, vowel signs (pili) attach before, after, above or below, and the al-lakuna (්) removes the vowel.
- Wijesekara: The Wijesekara layout, the standard Sinhala typewriter layout used in Sri Lanka. Vowel signs follow the consonant.
- Singlish (phonetic): Type Sinhala in English letters (Singlish): aayubowan → ආයුබොවන (use O for ෝ). th ත, dh ද, t ට, d ඩ; x or M for ං.

Tips for typing Sinhala
- Double vowels for long sounds: aa ා, ii ී, uu ූ.
- x or M gives the anusvara ං.
- Use _ to end a word with al-lakuna (්).
- Wijesekara is the layout for professional typists.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type Sinhala in Singlish?
Write the word by sound: amma → අම්ම, ammaa → අම්මා, lankaava → ලන්කාව (use x for ං: laxkaava → ලංකාව). th and dh give the dental ත ද, t and d the retroflex ට ඩ.
What is the Wijesekara layout?
It is the standard Sinhala typewriter layout, approved by the Sri Lankan government and used on Sinhala keyboards. Vowel signs are typed after the consonant.
How do I type ශ්රී?
Click the ශ්රී quick button. It needs a zero-width joiner, which is hard to type by hand.
How do I type sanyaka letters (ඟ ඬ ඳ ඹ)?
In Singlish use zg, zd, zdh and zb, or click the buttons.
