When to remove stop words, and when not to
Remove them for keyword lists, word clouds, topic tagging, search indexes and simple text classification.
Keep them when meaning depends on word order or negation, for example sentiment analysis, translation, phrase searches like “to be or not to be”, and readability checks.
Customize the list for your domain: in recipe text, words like cup or add may be just as uninformative as the.
Frequently asked questions
What are stop words?
Stop words are very common words, such as the, and, of, is and to in English, that carry little meaning on their own. They are often removed before keyword analysis, search indexing, word clouds or text mining so that the content words stand out.
Which stop word list does this tool use?
Its own lists of common function words: articles, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and auxiliary verbs. The standard English list has 205 entries including contractions like don't and it's; the short list has the 29 most frequent ones. There is no single official list, so you can add or keep words to suit your task.
Should I remove “not” and “no”?
For keyword research it is usually fine. For sentiment or meaning it is not: “not good” becomes “good”. Type not, no, never in the “Words to keep” box to protect them.
Does it change the rest of my text?
In cleaned-text mode only the stop words are removed; punctuation, line breaks and the capitalization of the remaining words stay, and leftover double spaces are tidied. Turn on Lowercase if you want normalized output.
Can I use it for SEO keyword analysis?
Yes. Choose “Unique + counts” to get every remaining keyword with its frequency, or download the keyword table as CSV. For keyword density percentages and phrases, use the Keyword Density Checker.
How are words matched?
Matching ignores case, so The, THE and the are all removed. Contractions and hyphenated words are treated as single words, and curly apostrophes are treated like straight ones.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, so your text stays on your device.
