How alphabetical order works here
Letter by letter: words are compared from the first letter onward, so car comes before cart, and cart before cat.
Language-aware: the browser's collation rules place accented letters next to their base letter (café after cafe, Émile among the E words).
Numbers by value: natural number ordering puts 2 before 10 and 10 before 100.
Ties: when case is ignored, words that differ only in capitals are equal; with duplicates removed, the first spelling in your text is the one kept.
Ideas for using an alphabetized word list
Spelling and vocabulary lists: paste a reading passage, remove common words and duplicates, and print the result grouped by letter.
Keyword and tag lists: turn a messy paragraph of tags into a clean, de-duplicated, comma-separated list.
Glossaries and indexes: collect the terms in a chapter in A to Z order as a starting point.
Puzzles and games: alphabetize clue words or check which letters of the alphabet have no word yet.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from sorting lines?
Sorting lines keeps each line intact and reorders whole lines. This tool breaks the text into individual words first, so a sentence like "the quick brown fox" becomes "brown fox quick the". Use Sort Lines Alphabetically when each item is a phrase on its own line.
What counts as a word?
With Strip punctuation on, a word is a run of letters and digits. Apostrophes, hyphens and periods inside a word keep it whole, so don't, well-known and a.m. stay as one word, while commas, quotes and end punctuation are dropped. With it off, the text is split on spaces and line breaks only and punctuation stays attached.
How are capital letters handled?
With Case-insensitive on, Apple, apple and APPLE are treated as the same word for sorting and duplicate removal, and the first spelling found is kept. With it off, they are different words and the capitalized form sorts just before the lowercase one.
Where do accented letters and numbers go?
Sorting follows your browser's language rules, so é and è sort together with e instead of after z. Numbers are compared by value, so 2 comes before 10, and numbers come before letters.
Can I see how often each word appears?
Yes. Choose Most frequent first with Remove duplicates on and each word is shown with its count, for example the (3). The stats panel also shows the single most frequent word.
What are the common words that can be removed?
About 40 very frequent English words such as a, an, and, the, of, to, in, is, it, you and with. Removing them leaves the meaningful words, which is handy for keyword lists and vocabulary practice.
Is my text private?
Yes. Sorting runs entirely in your browser and your text is never uploaded.
