Bracket names
( ) round brackets, called parentheses in American English: asides, abbreviations, years.
{ } curly braces: template placeholders and code blocks.
< > angle brackets: HTML and XML tags (use the Strip HTML Tags tool for full web pages).
How matching works
The text is scanned from left to right. Each opening bracket is put on a stack; a closing bracket matches the most recent open bracket of the same type. This is how a code editor pairs brackets, and it is why nested and mixed brackets such as “( [a] b )” are handled correctly. When the opening and closing markers are the same (for example ** or ♪), they simply alternate between opening and closing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove text in parentheses and the parentheses themselves?
Paste your text with the round brackets option ticked. Every “( … )” section, including the brackets, is removed and the spaces left behind are tidied, so “The tower (built 1889) is tall” becomes “The tower is tall”.
What happens with nested brackets?
By default the outermost pair is removed with everything inside, so “(a (b) c)” disappears completely. Choose “Remove only the innermost pairs” to remove just “(b)” and leave “(a c)”.
What if a bracket has no partner?
Unmatched brackets are left in the text unchanged and counted in the results, so a stray “(” never causes the rest of your document to be deleted.
Can I remove [citation needed] and [1] reference marks?
Yes. Tick square brackets only and every [1], [23] or [citation needed] is removed, which is handy for text copied from online encyclopedias.
How do I remove sound descriptions from subtitles?
Tick square and round brackets to remove cues like [DOOR SLAMS] and (sighs). Add a custom pair ♪ ♪ to remove music notes as well. Tick “Delete empty lines afterwards” so lines that held only a cue disappear too.
Can I keep the brackets but empty them?
Yes, tick “Keep the brackets”. {first_name} becomes {} and (note) becomes (), which is useful for checking templates.
Is my text uploaded?
No. All processing happens in your browser, so your text stays on your device.
