3.5 cups of flour | 3.5 cups of flour | Kept when outline numbers are off; with them on, “3.5” is treated as numbering |
Tips
- For recipes or lists that contain quantities at the start of lines (like “2 eggs”), set plain numbers to Never so only real numbering such as “1.” is removed.
- Turn off outline numbers if lines start with decimals such as prices or measurements.
- Letters are off by default because a line can legitimately start with “A.” or “I.”, for example an initial in a name.
- When you copy code from a web page or PDF with line numbers, check the result in monospace view to confirm the indentation lines up.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove line numbers from code I copied?
Paste the code, choose “Keep indentation (code)”, and leave plain numbers on Auto. The line numbers and the single space, tab, colon or bar after them are removed together with the gutter of spaces that all lines share, so the code's own indentation is kept.
Will it remove numbers that are part of my text?
Only numbers at the very start of a line in one of the selected styles are removed. Bare numbers without punctuation (like “2024 was a good year”) are removed only when most lines start with a number, which signals real line numbers. You can also set this to Always or Never.
Which numbering styles are supported?
1. 1) 1: 1 - 1 | , bracketed [1] (1) {1} <1>, #1, No. 1, Step 1, Line 1, outline numbers like 1.2.3, and optionally single letters (a), B.) and Roman numerals (iv.). Bullets such as •, - and * can be removed too.
Does it keep blank lines and indentation?
Yes. Blank lines stay, lines without numbers are unchanged and, in code mode, only the gutter shared by all numbered lines is removed. Turn on “Keep spaces before the number” to keep indentation that comes before nested list numbers.
What does the missing numbers report mean?
The tool checks whether the numbers it removed count up by one. If a list jumps from 4 to 6, number 5 is reported as missing, which helps you spot lines lost while copying.
Can I add numbers back later?
Yes, use the Add Line Numbers tool to renumber the cleaned text in any style.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, so your text and code never leave your device.
