Common soccer formations at a glance
| Formation | Shape (back to front) | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-4-2 | 4 defenders, 4 midfielders, 2 strikers | Simple, balanced, two lines of four are easy to coach | Can be outnumbered in central midfield by a 3-man midfield |
| 4-3-3 | 4 defenders, 3 central midfielders, 2 wingers + striker | Width in attack, strong pressing high up the pitch | Wingers must track back or full-backs get exposed |
| 4-2-3-1 | 4 defenders, 2 holding mids, 3 attacking mids, 1 striker | Very stable center, flexible attacking line | A lone striker can get isolated |
| 3-5-2 | 3 center-backs, 5 midfielders (incl. wing-backs), 2 strikers | Controls midfield, two forwards up top | Wing-backs need a lot of running |
| 5-3-2 / 5-4-1 | 3 center-backs + 2 wing-backs, then 3 or 4 mids | Hard to break down, good for protecting a lead | Few players in attack |
| 2-3-1 (7v7) | 2 defenders, 3 midfielders, 1 forward | Popular youth shape that teaches width and support | The middle player has a big job both ways |
| 3-3-2 (9v9) | 3 defenders, 3 midfielders, 2 forwards | Natural step from 7v7 toward 11v11 lines | Wide areas can be thin in defense |

Tips for a lineup graphic people actually read
- Use short names. First names or nicknames fit best on a phone screen; long names are shortened automatically.
- Pick contrasting colors. A dark shirt with a white number, or a light shirt with a dark number, stays readable on the green pitch. Give the goalkeeper a clearly different color.
- Add the kickoff time and opponent in Match info so the image doubles as a game-day reminder.
- Youth coaches: save a separate lineup per half or quarter to show playing-time rotations, and list the bench in Substitutes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I read a formation like 4-3-3?
Formation numbers count outfield players from the back to the front, not including the goalkeeper. 4-3-3 means four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards. A four-number formation such as 4-2-3-1 splits the midfield into a deeper and a more advanced line.
Which formations can I use for 7-a-side and 9-a-side?
For 7v7 the tool offers 2-3-1, 3-2-1, 2-1-2-1, 3-1-2 and 2-2-2. For 9v9 it offers 3-3-2, 3-2-3, 2-4-2, 3-4-1 and 2-3-3. 5-a-side includes 2-1-1, 1-2-1, 2-2 and 1-1-2. All counts are outfield players plus one goalkeeper.
Can I move players away from the default shape?
Yes. Drag any shirt to a new spot, for example to push a full-back higher or tuck a winger inside. Positions are remembered for each formation, and Reset positions puts them back to the standard shape.
What size is the downloaded image?
The PNG is 1080 pixels wide and 1360 pixels tall, a portrait shape that looks good in team chats, on phones and in social media feeds. It includes the team name, formation, match info, the pitch with players, and the subs and coach lines.
Are my players' names uploaded anywhere?
No. The lineup is drawn in your browser and saved only in your browser's local storage so it is still there next time. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I show position labels like CB or ST?
Yes. Tick Show position labels to add abbreviations such as GK, LB, CB, DM, CAM, LW and ST above each player on the pitch and in the exported image.
