Venn Diagram Maker
Type a list for each circle and the tool works out what the sets share, then draws a clean Venn diagram. Prefer to place items yourself? Switch to region mode. Download the result as PNG or SVG.
Regions
How to use the Venn Diagram Maker
- Choose 2 or 3 sets with the tabs at the top.
- Name each set and pick its color.
- Type the items of each set, one per line. Items that appear in several lists are placed in the overlap automatically. Or switch to Type each region to write the text for every region yourself.
- Adjust the look: title, opacity, text size, counts and set sizes.
- Press Download PNG or Download SVG to save the diagram.
Venn diagram regions and set notation
| Region | Set notation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A only | A ∖ (B ∪ C) | Items in A and in no other set |
| A and B only | (A ∩ B) ∖ C | Items in A and B but not in C |
| All three | A ∩ B ∩ C | Items common to every set |
| Union | A ∪ B ∪ C | Everything inside any circle |
The number of items in the union follows the inclusion–exclusion principle: |A ∪ B ∪ C| = |A| + |B| + |C| − |A ∩ B| − |A ∩ C| − |B ∩ C| + |A ∩ B ∩ C|.
Worked example
Dogs: Ann, Ben, Cara, Dev, Eli. Cats: Ben, Cara, Fay, Gus. Fish: Cara, Dev, Gus, Hal. The tool places Cara in the center (all three), Ben in Dogs ∩ Cats, Dev in Dogs ∩ Fish, Gus in Cats ∩ Fish, and Ann and Eli in Dogs only, Fay in Cats only and Hal in Fish only. Check with inclusion–exclusion: 5 + 4 + 4 − 2 − 2 − 2 + 1 = 8 people, which matches the eight names.
Ideas for using Venn diagrams
- Compare two lists, such as customers of two products or attendees of two events, and see who is in both.
- Teaching: sort animals, numbers (even, prime, multiples of 3) or story characters by their traits.
- Product and job comparisons: show shared and unique features of competing options.
- Brainstorming: find the sweet spot between what you love, what you are good at and what people need.
- Keep text short: one to three words per item reads best; put longer notes in the table or the copied list.
Frequently asked questions
How does the automatic mode work?
Every line in a set's box is one item. The tool compares the lists: an item found only in Dogs goes in the Dogs-only region, an item found in Dogs and Cats goes in their overlap, and an item found in all three lists goes in the center. Duplicates within a list are ignored, and matching ignores upper and lower case unless you untick that option.
How many regions does a Venn diagram have?
A 2-set diagram has 3 regions (A only, B only and A ∩ B). A 3-set diagram has 7 regions: three single-set areas, three areas shared by exactly two sets, and the center shared by all three.
What if a region has too many items to fit?
The diagram shows as many items as fit and ends with “+N more”. Long items are shortened with an ellipsis. The full lists are always in the Regions table below the diagram and in the copied region list. Lowering the text size lets more items fit.
Are the circle sizes proportional to the number of items?
No. This tool draws equal circles so every region has room for text, which is the usual style for teaching, presentations and comparisons. Use the Show counts and Set sizes options to display the numbers.
Can I edit the SVG later?
Yes. The SVG export uses plain circles and text, so you can open it in Inkscape, Illustrator, Figma or a text editor and change anything. PNG export is 1800×1400 pixels for crisp slides and documents.
Is my data private?
Yes. Everything is processed in your browser and only saved locally so your diagram is still there when you return. Nothing is uploaded.
