Thumbnail Maker
Design click-worthy YouTube thumbnails at exactly 1280 × 720. Start from a template, drop in your photos, add huge outlined text, arrows and emoji stickers, and download a JPG that fits YouTube's 2 MB limit.
Pick a layout, then edit the text and drop your photos into the image slots.
Click an element on the canvas to edit it.
How to use the Thumbnail Maker
- Pick a template on the Templates tab, or start from any of them and delete what you do not need.
- Add your photos: double-click an image slot (or select it and press Choose image). You can also drop a photo onto the canvas or paste it with Ctrl+V.
- Edit the text: click a text element, then change the words, font, color, outline and highlight box on the Edit tab. Keep it to 3 to 5 big words.
- Add stickers from the Add tab: arrows, shapes and emoji. Drag them into place, resize with the green corner and rotate with the orange handle.
- Download JPG: the tool exports 1280 × 720 and lowers the JPG quality only if needed to stay under YouTube's 2 MB limit.

Design checklist for thumbnails that get clicks
- Test it small. On a phone, a thumbnail in the feed is roughly 250 to 360 pixels wide, about a quarter of its real size. Text below about 60 px tall on the 1280 × 720 canvas becomes hard to read.
- Three to five words. The title already explains the video; the thumbnail adds emotion or curiosity. "I TRIED IT FOR 30 DAYS" beats a full sentence.
- Thick outlines. A dark outline of 6 to 9% of the font size and a drop shadow keep text readable on any photo. Bright yellow or white on dark works on every theme.
- One focal point. A face with a clear expression, a product, or a before/after pair. Add a single arrow or circle to point at the key detail.
- Keep the bottom-right clear. The video length badge covers about 120 × 50 px there. Turn on the timestamp overlay to check.
- Stay consistent. Reuse the same fonts, colors and layout across videos so viewers recognize your channel at a glance.
Why 1280 × 720 and not 1920 × 1080?
YouTube displays thumbnails at a maximum of about 1280 pixels wide even on large screens, and scales them down for every other placement. A 1920 × 1080 upload is resized by YouTube anyway and is more likely to exceed 2 MB. Exporting at exactly 1280 × 720 gives you full sharpness with the smallest file, and the 16:9 ratio matches the video player so nothing is cropped.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9) with a minimum width of 640 pixels. The file must be JPG, PNG or GIF and under 2 MB. This tool always exports exactly 1280 × 720 and keeps the JPG under 2 MB.
Is this thumbnail maker really free?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on downloads. Everything runs in your browser and your photos are never uploaded.
Why does my thumbnail need to be under 2 MB?
YouTube rejects custom thumbnails larger than 2 MB. Photos with lots of detail can exceed that as PNG, so the JPG export starts at 92% quality and steps down automatically until the file fits.
What makes a good YouTube thumbnail?
One clear subject (often a face with a strong expression), three to five large words, high contrast between text and background, and one focal accent such as an arrow or circle. Check it at small size: most viewers see it about 250 pixels wide on a phone.
What is the timestamp overlay?
YouTube places the video length in the bottom-right corner of every thumbnail. The overlay shows where it will sit so you can keep text and faces out of that area. It is never included in the downloaded image.
Can I use my own fonts?
The font list uses fonts installed on most devices, such as Impact, Arial Black, Verdana and Georgia. If a font is missing on your device, the browser substitutes a similar one and the preview shows exactly what will be exported.
Can I remove the background from my photo?
This tool does not cut out backgrounds. Use a background remover first, save the cutout as a transparent PNG, then add it with Add photo / cutout; transparent areas and shadows are kept.
