Text animation effects explained
Effect
What it does
Best for
Typing
Letters appear one by one with a cursor, pause, then start again
Intros, quotes, “coming soon” messages
Blink
The whole text switches on and off
Alerts, “SALE”, “NEW” badges
Bounce / Wave
Each letter hops or rides a wave, offset from its neighbors
Playful greetings, stream overlays
Rainbow
Every letter cycles through the color wheel
Celebrations, chat reactions
Scroll
A marquee that moves from right to left and loops seamlessly
Banners, tickers, long messages
Fade / Pulse
Smooth opacity or size breathing
Calm call-to-action buttons and logos
Shake / Neon
Jitter or a flickering glow sign
Gaming, attention grabbers, retro signs
Rule of thumb for loops: an animation repeats seamlessly when the effect completes a whole number of cycles in the chosen length. The tool rounds the cycle count automatically, so changing the speed or length never creates a jump at the loop point. Note that rapidly flashing content can be uncomfortable for some viewers; keep blinking slow (about 1–3 flashes per second or fewer).
Keeping GIF files small
A GIF stores every frame as up to 256 indexed colors compressed with LZW. The uncompressed size is roughly width × height × frames bytes, so a 500 × 250 GIF with 42 frames starts from about 5 MB before compression. To keep files light for chats and email:
Use the smallest canvas that looks good; halving both sides cuts the data by four.
Choose 10 or 14 fps; text rarely needs more.
Solid backgrounds and flat text colors compress best. Shadows, glow and the rainbow effect add colors and size.
Identical consecutive frames (for example during the typing pause or blink) are merged automatically into one longer frame.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make an animated text GIF?
Type your text, choose an effect such as Typing, Blink or Rainbow, adjust the font and colors, and click Create GIF. The GIF is encoded in your browser and can be downloaded immediately, without a watermark or sign-up.
Can I make a GIF with a transparent background?
Yes. Tick Transparent background. GIF supports only fully transparent or fully opaque pixels, so the soft anti-aliased edges of the letters are blended with the Edge (matte) color. Set it to the color of the page or chat where the GIF will be shown for the cleanest edges.
Why is my GIF file large?
File size grows with the canvas size, the number of frames and how much changes between frames. Lower the frame rate to 10 or 15 fps, shorten the duration, or use a smaller canvas. Effects where only part of the image changes (typing, blink) compress far better than full-motion effects like scrolling or rainbow.
What is the difference between GIF and WebM?
GIF works everywhere, including email and most chat apps, but is limited to 256 colors. WebM is a modern video format with full color and much smaller files, supported by browsers, Discord and many sites, but not by every app. WebM is recorded in real time, so it takes as long as the animation.
Which frame rate should I use?
15 fps is a good default for text. Use 20–25 fps for smooth scrolling or bouncing, and 10 fps for the smallest file. GIF delays are stored in hundredths of a second, so the actual rates are 10, 14.3, 20 and 25 fps.
Does the GIF loop forever?
By default yes. You can also make it play once or three times; the loop count is stored in the GIF's NETSCAPE2.0 extension, which all major browsers and apps respect.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Rendering and GIF encoding happen entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
