Build your family tree in the browser: add parents, children, spouses and siblings with birth and death years, places and photos. The tree lays itself out automatically, is saved on this device only, and exports as a PNG image or a printable PDF poster.

How to use the Family Tree Maker
Start from the example or click New tree, then click a person card to select it.
Edit the details in the Selected person panel: name, gender, birth and death dates, place and photo.
Grow the tree with Add parents, Add spouse, Add child and Add sibling. The layout updates instantly.
Set a poster title and theme, and choose whether to show dates, places and photos.
Save JSON to keep a backup you can open later, and Download PNG or PDF to share or print the tree.
How to research your family tree
Start with yourself and work backwards one generation at a time: parents, grandparents, great-grandparents.
Ask relatives first. Older family members often remember full names, maiden names, birthplaces and approximate years. Write down where each fact came from.
Collect documents at home: birth, marriage and death certificates, family bibles, letters, photo captions and obituaries.
Check public records such as census returns, civil registration indexes, church registers and gravestones to confirm dates and places.
Record uncertainty honestly. Write "c. 1890" (circa) or "abt. 1890" when a year is approximate, and leave fields empty rather than guessing.

Tips for a clear printed tree
Use the full birth name, and for married women the maiden name, so each person can be identified in records.
Keep dates in one style, either years only or "12 May 1950", for a tidy poster.
For large trees, split by branch (for example the mother's side and the father's side) and save each as its own JSON file.
Print on A3 or Tabloid for more than about 15 people, so names stay readable.
Frequently asked questions
Where is my family tree stored?
Only in your browser's local storage on this device, plus any JSON file you save. Nothing is uploaded. Clearing your browser data removes the autosave, so keep a JSON backup.
How do I add a second parent?
Select the child and click Add parents: a father and a mother are added together and linked as a couple, drawn side by side with a shared line down to their children. If the child already has one parent, the button adds the missing second parent as that parent's spouse.
Can a person have more than one spouse?
Yes. Select the person and click Add spouse again. All spouses are drawn next to the person on the same generation row, and children are drawn under the couple they belong to.
Can I import a GEDCOM file?
Not at the moment. This tool uses its own simple JSON format, which you can save and open again. It is meant for clear, printable trees of a few generations rather than full genealogy research.
What paper size should I print on?
Three generations with 10 to 15 people fit well on A4 or Letter landscape. Larger trees look better on A3 or Tabloid (11 × 17 in), or choose Fit to tree to get a PDF page exactly the size of the tree.
Why are photos small?
Photos are cropped to a square and stored at 160 × 160 pixels so the tree stays small enough for your browser storage and JSON file, which is plenty for a card on a poster.
