Turn the person, pet or object in a photo into a clean, solid silhouette. The subject is found with on-device AI background removal or by detecting a plain background, then traced into a smooth vector shape you can color, outline and download as PNG or SVG.

How to use the Silhouette Maker
Choose a photo of a person, pet or object. A sample cat on a plain background is loaded so you can see the result first.
Pick how to find the subject. AI subject works for most photos (the model downloads once, about 40 MB). Plain background is instant for studio or wall backgrounds; adjust the tolerance until the shape is right. Transparent PNG uses an existing cut-out.
Clean up the shape with Smooth edges, Shrink / grow, Fill holes and Keep only the main subject.
Style it: choose the silhouette color, solid or outline, and a transparent or colored background. Flip it if it should face the other way.
Download a PNG at the width you need, or the SVG vector for cutting machines, vinyl, laser engraving or large prints.

From mask to vector: what the tool does
Mask. A black-and-white map of the subject at up to 1000 px on the long side.
Clean up. Shrink / grow uses morphological erosion or dilation one pixel per step; Keep only the main subject removes blobs smaller than a quarter of the largest one; Fill holes floods the background from the edges and fills anything it cannot reach.
Smooth. The mask is blurred and thresholded at 50%, which rounds jagged pixel edges.
Trace. Every boundary between subject and background pixels is linked into closed outlines, simplified with the Ramer-Douglas-Peucker algorithm, and drawn as smooth quadratic curves. The PNG is rendered from this vector, so edges stay crisp at any width.
Ideas and tips
Profiles read best. A side view of a face, a pet or a dancer is instantly recognizable as a silhouette.
Wall art and decals: download the SVG, cut it from vinyl and apply it to a wall, a mug or a car window.
Party and wedding decorations: make a silhouette of a couple, a graduate or a pet in a theme color and use it on invitations or signs.
Logo drafts: a single-color silhouette of a product or animal is a quick starting point for a simple logo.
Use a high-resolution photo when you need a large print; the outline is traced from the photo, so more detail gives a more accurate shape.
Frequently asked questions
How does the silhouette maker find the subject?
In AI subject mode an image segmentation neural network (the same kind used by background removers) runs in your browser and marks which pixels belong to the main subject. In Plain background mode the tool samples the colors along the image border, takes the median as the background color and flood-fills every connected pixel within the tolerance; whatever is left is the subject.
What photos make the best silhouettes?
Photos with a clear outline: a person in profile, a pet standing or sitting sideways, a bicycle or a tree against the sky. Shapes with recognizable outlines read best as silhouettes, while a face seen straight on becomes an anonymous oval. Avoid crops that cut through the subject at the edge, and use a plain wall or sky for the fastest result.
Is the SVG a real vector file?
Yes. The shape is traced from the subject mask into closed paths, simplified with the Ramer-Douglas-Peucker algorithm and smoothed into quadratic curves. Holes, like the gap between an arm and the body, are kept using the even-odd fill rule. You can scale it to any size without pixelation.
Can I use the SVG with Cricut, Silhouette Studio or a laser cutter?
Yes. The SVG contains one path, sized in pixels to the PNG width you set. Import it into Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, Inkscape, Illustrator or LightBurn and resize it there. For vinyl and stencils, Fill holes and Smooth edges give a shape that is easier to weed and cut.
Why is part of the background included or part of the subject missing?
In Plain background mode, raise the tolerance if background shading stays in the shape, and lower it if parts of the subject that are similar in color to the background disappear. Turn on Keep only the main subject to drop stray blobs. If the background is busy, switch to AI subject.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser. In AI mode only the model files are downloaded from a public CDN the first time; your photo is processed locally and never sent anywhere.
