Setting a reading goal

Tips for keeping a reading log going
Log right after reading. Keep the sheet inside the current book or on the fridge so writing it down takes seconds.
Celebrate milestones. Pair the totals row with a reward chart, or color in a star for each finished book.
Let kids rate books. Even a quick star rating builds opinions and makes it easier to pick the next book.
Review once a month. Copy the totals to the yearly summary page and look back at favourite books and genres.
Frequently asked questions
What should a reading log include?
Most reading logs record the date, the book title and how much was read, either in pages or minutes. School logs usually add a parent or guardian initials column to confirm home reading, while adult reading journals often add author, genre, a star rating and notes.
Should kids log pages or minutes?
Minutes work best for young and emerging readers because picture books and early readers have very different page counts. Pages or chapters suit older readers of longer books. Many teachers set a daily minutes goal such as 20 minutes; you can keep both columns and fill in whichever you use.
How do I make a reading log for a whole year?
Choose “All 12 months” in the Month menu. The PDF then has one log page per month with the month name filled in, followed by a yearly summary page where you copy each month's totals.
How are the monthly totals used?
At the end of the month add up the Pages read and Minutes columns and write the sums in the shaded totals row, along with the number of books finished. Those numbers can then be copied to the yearly summary page.
Can I fill in the reading log on a computer?
The PDF is designed to be printed and filled in by hand. If you want to type, print to PDF and use a PDF editor to add text boxes, or keep the page as a PNG in a note-taking app that supports handwriting.
How many entries fit on a page?
It depends on the row size and options. On US Letter portrait the Large row size fits about 13 entries for young children, Regular about 18 and Compact about 23. The preview shows the exact number of rows.
