Cat Breed Identifier
Curious what breed your cat is? Upload or paste a photo and an AI image model running in your browser ranks the five most likely of 34 breeds, names the coat pattern (tabby, calico, tortoiseshell, colorpoint…) and coat length, and measures the main fur colors.

Private: your photo is analyzed in your browser and never uploaded. The AI model (CLIP) downloads once from a public CDN and is then cached.
How to use the Cat Breed Identifier
- Choose a photo of your cat, drop it on the box or paste it with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG and WebP work.
- Check the instant coat colors that appear under the photo right away.
- Wait for the AI model the first time (a large one-time download with a progress bar); later photos are analyzed in seconds.
- Read the top 5 breeds, the coat pattern and coat length. A clear winner means a strong match.
- Try another photo if results are close: a sharp, well-lit picture of the whole cat works best.
Breeds and patterns the identifier checks
| Group | Breeds included | Look for |
|---|---|---|
| Colorpoint | Siamese, Himalayan, Birman, Ragdoll, Tonkinese | Pale body with darker face, ears, paws and tail; blue or aqua eyes |
| Flat-faced & round | Persian, Exotic Shorthair, British Shorthair, Scottish Fold | Round head, short nose, dense coat; folded ears on the Scottish Fold |
| Large & fluffy | Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, Siberian, Turkish Angora, Turkish Van, Somali | Long or semi-long coat, ruff, plumed tail, ear tufts |
| Spotted & wild-looking | Bengal, Egyptian Mau, Ocicat, Savannah, Abyssinian | Spots, rosettes or ticked fur; athletic build |
| Solid-colored | Russian Blue, Chartreux, Bombay, Burmese, Havana Brown | One even color: blue-gray, black or brown |
| Slim & unusual coats | Oriental Shorthair, Sphynx, Cornish Rex, Devon Rex, Selkirk Rex, Manx | Very large ears, curly or no coat, missing tail |
| Mixed breed | Domestic Shorthair, Domestic Longhair | Any color and pattern; the most common pet cats |
Common cat coat patterns
- Tabby: stripes, swirls or spots with an "M" marking on the forehead. Classic, mackerel, spotted and ticked are the four tabby types.
- Calico: patches of white, orange and black (or their diluted cream and blue versions).
- Tortoiseshell: black and orange mottled together with little or no white.
- Tuxedo / bicolor: a solid color with white on the chest, paws or face.
- Colorpoint: darker extremities on a lighter body, caused by a temperature-sensitive gene.
- Van: mostly white with color only on the head and tail.
Tips for the best result
- One cat, filling the frame. Crop away people, furniture and other pets.
- Natural light, no filters. True fur color and texture matter a lot.
- Show the face and body. Ear shape, face shape and coat length are key clues.
- Try two or three photos. If the same breed keeps coming out on top, the signal is stronger.
Breed guesses are for curiosity. For health questions, talk to your veterinarian; for ancestry, a feline DNA test is the reliable option.
Frequently asked questions
How does the cat breed identifier work?
It uses CLIP, an AI model that learned to match images with text descriptions. The tool compares your photo with descriptions of 34 cat breeds, 13 coat patterns and 3 coat lengths and shows which fit best. The model runs in your browser with transformers.js, so the photo never leaves your device.
How accurate is it?
For clear photos of distinctive breeds such as the Siamese, Persian, Sphynx, Maine Coon, Bengal or Scottish Fold, the right breed is often first or in the top few. Results are less reliable for kittens, blurry or dark photos and breeds that look alike. Treat it as an educated guess, not proof of pedigree.
Most results say Domestic Shorthair. Why?
Because that is what most cats are. The large majority of pet cats are mixed-breed domestic cats rather than pedigrees, so when a cat does not strongly resemble a specific breed, the Domestic Shorthair or Longhair (mixed breed) option wins. A tabby or tuxedo coat is a color pattern, not a breed.
What is the difference between a breed and a coat pattern?
A breed is a population bred for a standard look and ancestry, like the Ragdoll or Russian Blue. A coat pattern describes the fur colors, such as tabby, calico, tortoiseshell or colorpoint, and appears in many breeds and in mixed-breed cats. Calico and tortoiseshell cats are almost always female, because the orange and black colors are carried on the X chromosome.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The AI library and model files are downloaded from public CDNs the first time and cached by your browser; your photo is analyzed locally. The instant color read also runs on your device.
Why is the first identification slow?
The CLIP model is large (over 100 MB), so the first download can take a while on slower connections. It is stored in your browser cache, so later visits and photos are much faster.
Can I find out my cat's breed for sure?
Only registration papers or a feline DNA test can confirm breed ancestry. A DNA test can also reveal genetic health markers. Photo-based tools like this one are for fun and curiosity.
