The letters are only a convention. You can rename the rows to anything, for example Love it / Like it / Meh / Never again, years, price ranges or school grades, and the colors adjust the label text automatically so it stays readable.
Entertainment: movies in a series, album tracks, TV show seasons, board games, video game characters.
Decisions: job offers, apartments, vacation spots or product options, ranked by how well they fit your needs.
Classroom and team activities: let students rank book characters or historical inventions and explain their choices.
Work: sort a feature backlog into must have, should have, could have and won't have.
Tips for a clean, shareable tier list
Use square pictures with the subject in the middle: uploaded images are cropped to a centered square.
Keep text items short (one to three words) so they stay readable in the 100 pixel tiles of the PNG.
Give text items different tile colors by changing the Tile color before you add each group, for example one color per category.
Your list autosaves in this browser only. To move it to another device, download the PNG or copy it as text.
Frequently asked questions
What does S tier mean?
S tier is the top rank, above A. The S rank is usually traced to Japanese grading systems and video game rankings, where an S score sits above A and is often read as 'special' or 'superior'. In a tier list S holds the very best items, A very good, B good, C average and D the weakest.
Can I use my own pictures?
Yes. Press Add images and choose as many pictures as you like. Each one is cropped to a square around its center and shrunk to a small tile so it fits in the list and in your browser's storage. The images stay on your device and are not uploaded anywhere.
Is my tier list saved?
Yes, every change is saved automatically in this browser's local storage, so the list is still there when you come back on the same device and browser. Browsers allow about 5 MB per site, which is enough for roughly a few hundred image tiles. If the storage is full, the tool tells you and keeps working without saving.
How do I move items on a phone or tablet?
You can drag items with your finger, or tap an item to select it and then tap the tier row where it should go. A bar under the board also lets you pick a tier from a menu or remove the selected item.
Can I change the number of tiers?
Yes. Use Add tier to create a new row, the arrow buttons to move a row up or down, and the remove button to delete it. Items in a deleted tier go back to the unranked pool, so nothing is lost.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Click or tab to an item and press Enter to select it. Then press 1 to 9 to move it to that tier (1 is the top row), 0 to send it back to the unranked pool, the left and right arrow keys to reorder it, Delete to remove it and Escape to deselect.
What size is the downloaded PNG?
The image is 1200 pixels wide and as tall as your list needs, drawn at that resolution so text and pictures stay sharp. You can choose whether the unranked items are included at the bottom.
