How to use the Comic Strip Maker
- Choose a panel layout in Strip settings, then adjust the gutter, borders and corner radius.
- Click a panel and choose an image to use your own drawing or photo as its background; zoom it and drag to pan.
- Add bubbles, captions and sound effects from the toolbar. Drag them into place and pull the round handle to point the tail at the speaker.
- Type the dialogue in the Selected item panel; the text wraps and shrinks automatically to fit the bubble.
- Add stick figures, shapes or sticker images to finish the scene.
- Download the PNG (or JPG) and share or print your comic.
Comic lettering tips
- Keep bubbles short. About 25 words per bubble and two or three bubbles per panel keep a strip easy to read. Split long speeches into two bubbles joined by the same speaker.
- Reading order matters. Readers scan each panel left to right and top to bottom, so place the first speaker's bubble higher and further left than the reply.
- Point tails at the mouth, not the body, and avoid crossing tails. Thought bubbles use a trail of circles instead of a pointed tail.
- Use shout bubbles sparingly for yelling, alarms or radio voices, and caption boxes for narration, time jumps ("Later that day…") and place names.
- Leave a gutter. The white space between panels signals the passing of time. Wider gutters slow the pace; borderless panels feel dreamy or timeless.
Which layout should I use?
| Layout | Size at 1× | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 3 panels in a row | 1800 × 700 px | Classic newspaper gag strip: setup, build-up, punchline |
| 4 panels in a row | 2400 × 700 px | Yonkoma-style four-beat jokes and short stories |
| 2 × 2 grid | 1400 × 1400 px | Square posts for social media |
| 2 rows × 3 | 1800 × 1300 px | Short stories, school assignments, storyboards |
| 1 wide + 2 / 2 + 1 wide | 1400 × 1300 px | An establishing shot or a big final reveal |
| Vertical 3 (webtoon) | 900 × 2400 px | Phone-friendly vertical scrolling |
Using hand-drawn art
Draw your characters on white paper with a dark pen, photograph them in good daylight from straight above, and crop the photo. Set a drawing as a panel image to fill the whole frame, or add it as a sticker with Drawing to place a single character. PNG files with a transparent background (for example from a background-remover) sit naturally on any panel colour. Turn on Black & white for a classic ink look on photos.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my own drawings?
Yes. Draw on paper and take a photo, or draw in any app, then either set the image as a panel background (it fills the panel and can be zoomed and panned) or add it as a sticker that you can move and resize freely. Images stay on your device.
How do I point a speech bubble at a character?
Select the bubble and drag the round orange handle at the end of its tail. Speech and shout bubbles get a pointed tail, thought bubbles get a trail of small circles.
Why is comic text often in capital letters?
Traditional hand lettering used capitals because they stay readable at small sizes and print reliably. The All caps option keeps that classic look, but you can turn it off for sentence case.
What size is the downloaded comic?
A three-panel strip is 1800 × 700 pixels at 1× and 3600 × 1400 pixels at 2×. The size of every layout is shown under the canvas. Use 2× for printing and 1× for web posts.
Is this good for school projects?
Yes. Students can plan a story in panels, add dialogue and captions, and download a PNG to paste into slides or documents. There is no sign-up and nothing is uploaded, which makes it suitable for classrooms.
Can I make a vertical webtoon-style comic?
Yes. Pick the Vertical 3 panels layout for a tall scroll-style strip that reads well on phones.
