Make a sign that looks hand-chalked in a couple of minutes. Start from a café menu, welcome, birthday or first-day-of-school template, edit the lines, pick hand-lettered fonts and chalk colors, add banners, dividers and doodles, then print it or share the PNG.

How to use the Chalkboard Sign Maker
Choose a template and a sign size, such as an 18 × 24 in poster or a square image for social media.
Edit the lines: change the text, and set each line's type, font, size and chalk color. Use Add line for more.
For menu items, choose the Menu item type and separate the name and price with a vertical bar, for example Latte | $4.50.
Decorate with a border, corner flourishes, sparkles, hearts or vines. Press Shuffle doodles for a new arrangement.
Pick the board: classic black, green or slate, with or without a wooden frame and chalk texture.
Download a PNG for screens and social posts, or a PDF to print.
Chalkboard lettering tips that make a sign look professional
Use two or three fonts, not more. Pair one decorative headline style (a script or the chalk outline font) with a simple hand-lettered font for the details.
Build a clear hierarchy. The most important words should be two to three times the size of the body text. People read a sign in a couple of seconds.
Mix cases and styles on purpose. A tall all-caps word next to a flowing script word is the classic chalkboard look.
Keep color for emphasis. Mostly white chalk with one or two accent colors reads better than a rainbow.
Leave breathing room. Dividers and small doodles help group information, but empty board is part of the design.

A common sign-making rule of thumb is about 10 ft of comfortable reading distance for every inch of letter height; for quick glances from a moving crowd, go bigger.
Printing a chalkboard sign
For a sharp print, download the PDF at Sign size and send it to a print shop, which can print posters and A-frame inserts on matte paper or foam board. For a counter sign at home, choose US Letter (fit). Because the board is dark, printing uses a lot of ink, so check your printer settings first. If you want a plain light sign instead, try the Printable Sign Maker, or build a full price list with the Menu Maker.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a chalkboard sign online?
Pick a template, edit the text lines, choose fonts and chalk colors, and add a few doodles. The sign is drawn in your browser on a textured chalkboard background, and you can download it as a PNG image or a PDF ready for printing. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.
How do I add prices with dotted lines on a menu?
Set the line type to Menu item and write the item and price separated by a vertical bar, such as Avocado Toast | $8.50. The item name is placed on the left, the price on the right, and a dotted leader line fills the space between them.
What size should I print a chalkboard sign?
Common sizes are 18 × 24 in for a wall or easel poster, 24 × 36 in for a sidewalk A-frame, 8.5 × 11 in for a table or counter sign, and 5 × 7 in for small table cards. Choose the size before you design so the text fits that shape, then choose Sign size or Letter page in the PDF options.
Will a chalkboard sign use a lot of ink?
Yes, a full black background uses a lot of ink on a home printer. For large signs, a print shop or an engineering print (often a low-cost black-and-white large-format print) is usually cheaper. For screens, social posts and digital menu boards the PNG works perfectly.
Can I write on a real chalkboard using this design?
Yes. Many people use the downloaded image as a guide: display it on a tablet or print it, then copy the layout freehand with chalk markers, or print it at full size and trace the letters with transfer paper. The layout, font mix and spacing are the hard part, and the planner handles them.
Why does my text get smaller when I add lines?
The sign keeps everything on the board. When the lines are taller than the space available, every line is scaled down by the same amount so the hierarchy stays the same. Remove a line, shorten the text or reduce the line spacing to make the text larger again.
Can I use the signs for my business or event?
Yes. The signs you make are yours to print and share, including for a café, shop, school, wedding or party. The fonts are open-licensed Google Fonts, and the doodles are drawn by the tool itself.
