How to use the vCard QR Code Generator
Enter your details. Name, job title, company, phone numbers, email and website. Leave any field empty to skip it.
Add an address or note only if needed. Every extra character makes the QR code denser, so keep optional fields short.
Pick a layout. Business card shows a printable 3.5 × 2 inch card; QR code only gives a plain square code for your own designs.
Test it. Point your phone camera at the preview; it should offer to add the contact.
Download or print. Save a PNG or SVG, a .vcf file, or print one card or a sheet of ten at 100% scale.
What goes inside a vCard QR code
The QR code stores plain text in the vCard 3.0 format defined in RFC 2426. Each line is a property: N holds the structured name (last name; first name), FN the display name, ORG and TITLE the company and job title, TEL the phone numbers with a type such as CELL or WORK, plus EMAIL, URL, ADR and NOTE. Commas, semicolons and backslashes in your text are escaped so they are not mistaken for separators, and lines end with CRLF as the standard requires. You can see the exact text under “vCard 3.0 text inside the QR code”.
The QR code itself is generated in byte mode with UTF-8 text, so accented names and non-Latin scripts are kept. The tool picks the smallest QR version (size) that fits your data at the chosen error correction level.
How much data makes a code hard to scan?
More text means a higher QR version with more, smaller modules. These examples were measured with this tool at Low error correction (longer names, emails and URLs push the version up):
Contact contents
Approx. vCard size
Typical QR version
Modules across
Name, mobile phone, email
about 145 bytes
7
45
+ job title, company, website
about 210 bytes
9
53
+ city, state and country
about 245 bytes
10

+ work phone, street address, ZIP and a short note
about 350 bytes

65
For printed cards, aim for modules at least about 0.4 mm wide. The tool warns you when the code is getting dense.
Printing tips
Always print at 100% or “Actual size”; “Fit to page” shrinks the card and the QR code.
The sheet of 10 uses the common Letter layout (two columns of five, 0.75 in side and 0.5 in top margins), so it lines up with standard 10-up perforated business card sheets. On plain paper, cut along the crop marks.
Keep the white margin around the QR code (the quiet zone). Do not place it on a busy background.
Test a printout with two different phones before printing a large batch.
Want a fully designed card? Use the Business Card Maker and place the PNG or SVG from “QR code only” on it. For a guest network sign, see the WiFi QR Code Generator.
Frequently asked questions
What is a vCard QR code?
It is a QR code that contains a contact card in the vCard format: name, phone numbers, email, website and so on. When someone scans it with a phone camera, the phone offers to save you as a new contact, with no typing.
Do iPhones and Android phones read vCard QR codes?
Yes. The built-in camera apps on current iPhones and most Android phones recognise vCard 3.0 QR codes and show an option to add the contact. Some older Android phones need Google Lens or a QR scanner app.
Why is my contact QR code so dense?
A vCard holds a lot of text, and every character adds modules to the code. Long addresses and notes make it denser and harder to scan when printed small. Remove optional fields or keep error correction on Low to get a simpler code.
How big should the QR code be on a business card?
At least about 2 cm (0.8 in) wide for a simple contact. The card layout here uses roughly 3.5 cm, which scans comfortably. If you add an address and note, keep the code at that size or larger.
Can I update the contact after printing?
No. A vCard QR code stores the details directly in the pattern, so a new phone number means a new code. That also means it works forever without any website or subscription.
What is the .vcf download for?
A .vcf file is the same vCard as a file. You can email it, attach it to your signature, or import it into Outlook, Apple Contacts or Google Contacts.
Is my contact information uploaded anywhere?
No. The vCard text and QR code are created by JavaScript in your browser, and the downloads are generated on your device.
