How anagrams are checked
Two words are anagrams when they contain the same letters the same number of times. The solver turns each word into a count of its 26 letters. listen has one each of E, I, L, N, S and T, and so does silent, so they match. A sub-word such as tile only needs letters whose counts fit inside the original, which is why it is listed under the 4-letter words.
For multi-word anagrams the solver picks a first word, subtracts its letters, then looks for words that use the remaining letters, and repeats until nothing is left. Longer words are tried first, so the most compact phrases appear at the top of the list.
Tips for better phrase anagrams
- Raise Shortest word to 4 letters to hide filler words such as “ab” and “ti”.
- Use Must include with a word that fits the theme (a pet name, a hobby, a place) and let the solver arrange the rest.
- Limit the word count to 2 words for punchy results, or allow 4 words for long names.

Frequently asked questions
What is an anagram?
An anagram is a word or phrase made by rearranging all the letters of another word or phrase, using each letter exactly once. For example listen becomes silent, tinsel and enlist, and dormitory becomes dirty room.
How does this anagram solver work?
It counts how many times each letter appears in your input and compares that with every word in a 109,000-word English list. Words with exactly the same letter counts are full anagrams; words that use only some of the letters are listed as sub-words. Multi-word anagrams are found by combining sub-words until every letter is used.
Can it find anagrams of names and phrases?
Yes. Tick Multi-word anagrams and type the whole name or phrase. Spaces are ignored, so “Clint Eastwood” is treated as the letters clinteastwood. Use Max words, Shortest word and Must include to get readable results.
Why are some results unusual words?
The word list includes many rare and old English words so that word game players do not miss valid plays. For phrase anagrams, raise Shortest word to 4 or add a Must include word to get more natural results.
Is there a letter limit?
Single-word anagrams and sub-words work with up to 30 letters. Multi-word anagrams work with up to 22 letters, and very long inputs can have tens of thousands of combinations, so the list is trimmed and the most compact phrases are shown first.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The word list is downloaded once and all searching happens on your device, so the words and names you type stay private.
